PlayStation 5 discs won’t vanish in 2028, Sony confirms

PlayStation 5 Disc

Remember the panic when Sony said it’s ditching physical PlayStation discs after January 2028? Turns out that news wasn’t the full picture.

According to a new Game File report, Sony has told publishers they’ll “still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games.” So if your favourite title came out before the cutoff, you’ll still be able to grab a physical copy of it even after 2028. That’s a relief for anyone who likes owning a shelf full of games instead of a list of download codes.

What changes for PlayStation’s ordering process

There’s a catch, though. Sony says the “ordering process for the discs” is changing, and hasn’t said how yet. So publishers can keep making discs for old games, but the way they actually get them printed is getting an overhaul nobody’s seen the details of.

As for games releasing after the deadline, Sony’s plan is for publishers to sell them at retail using digital codes instead of discs. Which raises the obvious question: what happens when a 2027 game gets a reprint in 2028? Will it just come as a code on a card, or something else entirely? Nobody knows yet.

So the death of physical PlayStation games isn’t quite as final as it first sounded. It’s more of a slow fade, with a few blanks still to be filled in.
