Sony may be rethinking its 2028 Disc-Killing plan, leak claims

Sony might be getting cold feet over killing PlayStation discs, if you believe the latest leak doing the rounds.

The plan to stop manufacturing PS5 discs from January 2028 didn’t exactly land well. Fans launched petitions, boycotts got organised, and the backlash has been loud enough that you’d think Sony would just power through it anyway. Factories are reportedly already being retooled away from disc production, so a reversal always felt unlikely.

Leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead, who claims Sony has sent developers an unusually large survey, apparently trying to gauge how they’d feel about the death of physical games without asking the question outright. According to MLID’s contacts, it’s one of the biggest surveys Sony has sent out, and buried in it is language fishing for feedback on selling games physically.

That’s the whole story, really, and it’s worth stressing this is a leak built on unnamed contacts, not a Sony press release. Still, MLID is stacking a few other data points next to it. There’s Shuhei Yoshida seemingly taking a swipe at PlayStation’s Herman Hulst after being far more diplomatic weeks ago. There’s also a symbolic moment at TGS 2026, where Yoshida and former colleague Adam Boyes restaged their famous 2013 disc-swap photo, except this time they swapped nothing. Fans read it as a quiet dig, though Yoshida has publicly backed the discless future before, so I wouldn’t read too much into a photo op.

The one genuinely concrete detail is Marvel’s Wolverine. Data from Alinea Analytics puts 23% of the game’s first three days of revenue down to retail sales, which is a decent chunk for a game everyone assumed was mostly digital anyway.

So does any of this mean Sony’s actually walking back 2028? Not necessarily. Surveys get sent for all sorts of reasons, and asking developers how they feel isn’t the same as changing a plan that’s already in motion. I’d file this under “interesting smoke,” not confirmation of fire. Sony’s said nothing official, and until it does, I’m not holding my breath.
