OpenAI is making the free version of ChatGPT more useful with a major change. Free and Go users can now have unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna.
The company announced the change on August 6, saying Luna would become the default model for Free and Go users. OpenAI also added a new Think option that lets free users give Luna more time to work on harder questions.
This means free users no longer have to worry about the old message limit during normal text conversations. The unlimited access is still subject to OpenAI’s abuse-prevention safeguards.
GPT-5.6 Luna is made for everyday use
GPT-5.6 Luna is the fastest and lowest-cost model in the GPT-5.6 family. OpenAI designed it to handle everyday tasks while keeping responses fast.
The company has also introduced GPT-5.6 Sol, which is aimed at more difficult work such as coding, research, science, cybersecurity and other tasks that need deeper reasoning.
For paid ChatGPT users, Sol is used for the main reasoning options. Free and Go users get Luna instead.
Free users also get the Think button
The update is not only about unlimited messages. Free users can also use the new Think option for questions that need more work.
Think uses GPT-5.6 Luna rather than GPT-5.6 Sol. It gives the model more time to reason before producing an answer, which can be useful for harder questions and problems.
However, unlimited text chats do not mean that every ChatGPT feature is unlimited. OpenAI says separate limits still apply to file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools.
A big upgrade for free users
The change makes ChatGPT’s free plan much more useful for people who mainly use it for text. Users can ask questions, write content, brainstorm ideas and work through problems without constantly watching a message counter.
It also gives OpenAI a stronger free offering as AI services continue to compete for everyday users. The company is effectively making normal text conversations available without a standard usage cap while keeping more advanced features and models behind paid plans.
For people who only need ChatGPT for everyday text work, GPT-5.6 Luna’s unlimited access is a significant upgrade to the free experience.
