OpenAI is rushing out an always-on agent called “o”

OpenAI wanted Dev Day to be all about its own news, but Meta’s Muse got the attention first. Now they are looking set to answer with their own AI agent, called “o”.

The “o” name has started showing up in ChatGPT Pro material, which usually means a launch is close. Dev Day is on Tuesday, so I expect it to be shown there.

We don’t know much yet. “o” is rumoured to run on a version of GPT-6 Astra called Aeon, which is probably built for long tasks. That is what an agent that works in the background needs. It may also be the software for OpenAI’s rumoured donut-shaped device, which might have moving parts.

JP Morgan has put Muse at number one on Assistant Benchmark. Muse can finish multi-step tasks for you, use a cloud browser like a person would, and keep working after you close the app. It runs in its own isolated virtual machine, so your data and logins stay separate. The same report says Muse is already struggling with computing demand, even though it has fewer than 1 million daily users.

A $500 ChatGPT plan from OpenAI may also show up

OpenAI is also expected to announce ChatGPT Pro Max at Dev Day. It reportedly costs $500 per month and offers very fast replies, likely using Cerebras’ Wafer-Scale Engine.

That is a lot to pay for speed. I’ll wait to see if “o” is worth it.
