Konkr Pocket Block orders are open, starting at $79

A Game Boy shaped Android handheld for under $100 is a easy sell on paper. Ayaneo has now opened orders for the Konkr Pocket Block, which its budget Konkr sub-brand first showed off back in May.

The 2 GB RAM and 32 GB storage model costs $89, while the 3 GB and 64 GB version costs $109. There is an early bird deal knocking $10 off both, which brings them down to $79 and $99. Shipping is due to start at the end of October.

You get a 3.33-inch 4:3 LCD with a 960 x 720 resolution, a MediaTek Helio G85 chip, a microSD slot and a 3,500 mAh battery. It runs Android 12 and has no fan, so Ayaneo is relying on a heat spreader to handle the heat. The 2 GB model appears to come only in gray, while the 3 GB version also gets Cube Purple and a translucent Atoms White. I’d take the purple one, objectively.

What can it run?

The Helio G85 is a budget chip, so I reckon this is a machine for older systems, up to around the PS1 and PSP era. PS2 and GameCube games will probably be a struggle, so don’t buy it expecting otherwise.

Ayaneo also called this the world’s first AI handheld in May, yet it still hasn’t said what the AI features are. Right. Meanwhile, the company has launched the Game Boy Advance inspired Konkr Pocket Advance too.

The pricing looks fair enough to tempt me.
