If you thought Sony scrapping discs by 2028 would just fade into another news cycle, think again. A chunk of the PlayStation community is now cancelling their PS Plus subscriptions on purpose, and they want Sony to notice.
PlayStation fans are fighting back
It kicked off after Sony confirmed it’s dropping physical discs from 2028, with Xbox’s next console, Project Helix, reportedly skipping a disc drive too. That’s got a lot of gamers worried that owning a game, not just renting access to it, is about to become a thing of the past.
One user, Pyo on X, posted a step-by-step guide on cancelling PS Plus, ending with a blunt warning: “Speak up today or lose ownership forever!” Under the post, people are sharing screenshots of their cancelled renewals like trophies.
And honestly, the fear isn’t baseless. Sony recently pulled 500 films from people’s digital libraries, so it’s fair to ask what stops the same thing happening to games. It’s already happened before, too. Marvel’s Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 and Deadpool (2013) can’t be bought digitally anymore, purely because Activision let the Marvel license lapse. Discs are the only way to still play them.

Then there’s the second-hand market, which plenty of gamers lean on to keep the hobby affordable. Push everyone to digital storefronts (which tend to charge more anyway), and thousands of fans get priced out, especially with PS Plus price hikes already on the table.

Whether this dents Sony’s plans is anyone’s guess. But trust in the PlayStation brand? That’s taking a proper hit right now.
