GTA 6 physical copies in Japan expire after 170 days

If you’re in Japan and planning to grab a physical copy of GTA 6, don’t let it sit on the shelf.

Rockstar’s most anticipated release yet lands on November 19, 2026, and pre-orders are already live. We already knew PS5 codes are region-locked, but now there’s another wrinkle specific to Japan: the code inside physical copies expires 170 days after you redeem it, or don’t redeem it in time.

That’s because GTA 6‘s “physical edition” isn’t really physical. There’s no disc, just a code in the box, a trend more publishers are leaning into. Everywhere else in the world, that code lasts indefinitely. In Japan, it doesn’t.

Why GTA 6’s Japan-Only Rule Exists

As spotted by Genki_JPN and reported by IGN, this comes down to Japanese consumer protection law. Companies selling digital codes there have to pay the government a hefty sum to cover buyers in case the company disappears or goes bust. Rockstar isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, obviously, but the law doesn’t make exceptions. Rules are rules.

It does leave one obvious question hanging: what happens if you buy the game after launch day? Logically, the 170-day clock should still start from your purchase, but it’s also possible Rockstar simply doesn’t restock physical editions in Japan once the initial run is gone. Nobody’s confirmed which yet.

Either way, if you’re in Japan and want the physical version, redeem that code the moment you get it. 170 days sounds like a lot until it isn’t.
