Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro finally gets a real Aperture dial

Apple gave the iPhone camera something it’s never had: an actual aperture you can control. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max landed today, and the main feature is a 48MP Fusion Main camera with six blades that physically shift between aperture settings. You can let it auto-adjust, or take manual control in the Camera app. Developers even get an API to tap into it. That’s a genuine first for iPhone, not just a spec bump dressed up as one.

A chip built to stay fast, not just start fast

The new A20 Pro chip is built on a 2-nanometer process, with a 6-core CPU and a 7-core GPU that’s reportedly up to 40 percent quicker than last year’s model. Apple’s also redesigned the internal layout so the chip sits next to the memory instead of underneath it, freeing up room for a vapor chamber three times bigger than the one in the iPhone 17 Pro.

Battery life gets a proper jump too. The eSIM-only Pro Max reportedly hits up to 45 hours of video playback, and five minutes on a wired charger apparently buys around seven hours of use. If that holds up in real use, it quietly solves the one complaint that never goes away with iPhones.

There’s also a new Reference Image feature that signs sensor data at the moment of capture, letting you compare an unaltered “digital negative” against the final photo. In a year where AI-generated images are everywhere, that’s a smart bit of future-proofing, whether or not most people ever use it.

iPhone 18 Pro pricing starts at $1,199 for the Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max, with pre-orders opening this Saturday and phones shipping September 18. Not cheap, but then again, when has it ever been?
