This week’s PS4 and PS5 launch of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 didn’t go smoothly. The PlayStation Store crashed from demand, people complained about the price without PS Plus, and then came the part that actually worried people: nobody was sure if crossplay was working properly.
The rumour going round was that there was no cross-gen matchmaking at all, and worse, that Season Pass owners couldn’t play with everyone else. Classic launch week mess.
Black Ops crossplay works across PS4 and PS5
Activision has now cleared that up. The Call of Duty team confirmed on social media that PS4 and PS5 players can match up together just fine. The only block is with other hardware, so PS3 players are left out. And Season Pass owners aren’t kept separate either, they’re matched with non-Season Pass players in both games, same as always.

Good news if your friend group is a mix of last-gen and current-gen consoles. Bad news if you were hoping a broken matchmaking system explained why that lobby took ten minutes to fill. Turns out it was just BO2 being BO2.
