God of War Laufey devs confirm physical release amid disc backlash

God of War Laufey

Sony picking a fight with its own player base over discs is now everyone else’s problem too, and Santa Monica Studio just got dragged into it.

The studio posted about a God of War Laufey panel coming to San Diego Comic-Con in two weeks. “Forging God of War’s Next Heroes” will bring out creative head Cory Barlog, game director Ariel Lawrence, and voice cast members Deborah Ann Woll, Christopher Judge, Jack Quad, and Perlina Lau. Should’ve been a fun announcement. Instead, the replies filled up with one demand: tell us it’s coming on disc.

God of War Laufey fans won’t let Sony’s discless plan go quietly

Thirty-three minutes later, the studio did exactly that, confirming God of War Laufey will get a physical release. It also quietly points to a launch window, since Sony’s plan to stop putting new games on disc kicks in during 2028. That makes 2027 the safer bet for Laufey over a 2026 release, though nothing’s official yet.

None of this should have needed saying out loud. Santa Monica Studio didn’t make the call to phase out discs; Sony did, and taking it out on the developers gets nobody anywhere. Game studios aren’t exactly cheering for their own work to become less accessible.

Sony set this fire. The devs are just the ones stuck answering for it. If you care about physical media, vote with your wallet when God of War Laufey actually launches, whenever that ends up being.
