New Far Cry game “Kodiak” enters development at Ubisoft

Far Cry just can’t catch a break behind the scenes, but this time there’s actually some good news buried in it. A new game in the series, codenamed Kodiak, has passed its early planning stage at Ubisoft and is now in full development at Vantage Studios. And thankfully, it’s not the extraction shooter fans were dreading.

Kodiak is an open-world FPS, and Ubisoft says player interactions and player-driven stories will be front and centre. That’s a notable shift, because Kodiak was actually built using the foundations of Maverick, the extraction shooter that got cancelled after a rocky run. So the bones of that cancelled project weren’t wasted, they just got repurposed into something the audience will probably prefer.

Sources describe Kodiak as “really ambitious,” though don’t expect to play it anytime soon. It’s still several years out from release.

Where this leaves Far Cry Blackbird

Kodiak isn’t the only Far Cry game going through a tough development. Blackbird, the next mainline entry, has been delayed internally more than once. The good news is it now seems to be back on track, and it’s bringing a multiplayer mode where more than one player can explore the world together.

Vantage Studios boss Charlie Guillemot called Blackbird “honestly impressive” and referred to it as “Act One,” hinting that more mainline Far Cry games are planned if Blackbird lands well with players.

Between Kodiak and Blackbird, Vantage Studios is clearly betting big on Far Cry’s future. Whether that pays off depends entirely on how Blackbird performs first.
