PlayStation fans have had enough, and now they’re doing something about it.
Angry over Sony’s plan to stop making physical game discs, a group of PS5 players is organising a week-long blackout of the platform. The idea is simple: turn off your console or log out for seven days straight to send Sony a message it can’t ignore.
The call to action comes from X user Does It Play, who laid out years of frustration in a statement. Closing studios like Bluepoint, chasing live-service trends nobody asked for, cancelling fan events, letting PSVR2 wither away. According to the statement, ending physical discs in 2028 is simply the final straw.
The plan itself is that players sit out from Sunday, August 23rd at 7 pm local time through to Sunday, August 30th at 7 pm. No purchases, no logging in, nothing. The idea is to hit Sony where it counts without dragging developers and publishers into the crossfire too much.
Will the PlayStation protest actually change anything?
Here’s the problem. Does It Play’s post has racked up 13,000 likes. Sounds like a lot until you remember PlayStation Network was pulling in roughly 123 million active users a month as of June 2025. Even if every single person who liked that post joins the blackout, that’s about 0.01% of the total user base. Sony’s accountants won’t even notice.
The numbers elsewhere back this up too. Digital-only re-releases of Black Ops and Black Ops II knocked GTA VI off PS5’s bestseller chart this month, despite being over a decade old and priced at $40 each. Meanwhile, only seven PlayStation games managed to sell more than 100,000 physical copies in 2026, a drop in the ocean compared to digital sales.
Sony’s made its bet, and it’s already winning. This blackout might make for a good headline, but it’s not moving the needle where it matters.
