State of Decay 3 will prioritise single-player over multiplayer, according to a new interview with Undead Labs studio head Philip Holt. Multiplayer is still part of the game, but the solo experience is the main focus.
Holt said Undead Labs now owns the State of Decay IP, and a new publisher will be announced soon. A console beta with crossplay is also planned.
Here is what else he confirmed for State of Decay 3:
- Combat has been rebuilt from scratch and is more tactical.
- Settlements are larger, with multiple bases and 12 or more survivors.
- Single-player can be fully paused.
- There is no face or body editor, but hair, outfits and backpacks can be customised.
- Existing Freaks are getting major redesigns, and new Freak types will arrive after launch.
- Weather affects driving, zombie perception, crops and water supplies.
- Relationships with human enclaves change based on your actions.

Undead Labs went independent in September 2026 after splitting from Xbox. A publisher deal being close is good news for the studio, and I’m keen to see who it is.
