Recasting a lead role before a game’s even out is always a bit of a gut punch for fans, and that’s exactly what’s happened with Tides of Annihilation.
Jennifer English is stepping away
Eclipse Glow Games has confirmed that Jennifer English will no longer voice Gwendolyn, the Tides of Annihilation lead, because of health reasons. The studio broke the news on social media, saying English told them back in June that she couldn’t continue in the role. She’ll still stick around in an advisory capacity, which is a nice touch given the circumstances.

A new voice steps in
The good news is the team hasn’t been left scrambling. A replacement has already been found, reportedly with English’s own input and blessing, and the new performer is currently recording lines for the hands-on demo planned for Gamescom 2026 in Cologne. Eclipse says the switch also drew recommendations from other cast members, and the new actor apparently impressed both English and the studio with how she approached the character.
Tides of Annihilation has been building buzz as an ambitious swing for a first-time studio, with players tearing through a ravaged England and facing off against genuinely massive enemies. Losing your lead this close to a big public showing isn’t ideal timing, but the fact Eclipse got English’s blessing on her successor suggests this could be a smoother transition than most recasts manage.

I reckon the real test comes at Gamescom, when players finally hear the new Gwendolyn for themselves.
