Spyro the Dragon is finally returning to consoles, and it’s been a long time coming.

Microsoft’s June 2026 Xbox Showcase brought one of its biggest surprises: a brand-new Spyro game titled A Realm Beyond. It marks the beloved purple dragon’s first original console adventure since The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon in 2008, nearly two decades of silence.

What we know about A Realm Beyond

The game was teased during the Showcase rather than fully unveiled, so details remain thin. What’s confirmed is a 2027 release window across all major consoles and PC, meaning it won’t be exclusive to Xbox.

Toys for Bob is handling development. the same studio behind 2020’s Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. That pedigree is encouraging. Toys for Bob has a proven track record with legacy platformers, and Crash 4 was genuinely excellent, so there’s real reason to be optimistic here.

This purple dragon spent his early years as something of a PlayStation mascot alongside Crash Bandicoot, Lara Croft, and PaRappa the Rapper. The franchise later expanded to Nintendo handhelds before going quiet for years. The last release was the Reignited Trilogy in 2018, remasters of the original PlayStation trilogy, but that wasn’t a new adventure.
