Tom Kane, voice of Yoda and Star Wars icon, dies at 64

Tom Kane

The voice behind some of gaming’s most iconic characters has been lost. Tom Kane, the beloved American voice actor whose career spanned decades and dozens of beloved franchises, passed away on 18 May at the age of 64.

A career built on iconic voices

Tom Kane’s résumé reads like a greatest hits of geek culture. In the Star Wars universe alone, he voiced Yoda, Admiral Ackbar, Boba Fett, and Qui-Gon Jinn, characters recognised by millions worldwide. His gaming work was just as impressive, covering Jim Gordon in Batman: Arkham Asylum, Magneto in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Takeo Masaki across the Call of Duty: Black Ops series. He’d been a fixture in the industry since the 1990s.

Stroke complications led to his passing

Tom Kane had been living with the effects of a serious stroke since 2020. He died in a Kansas City hospital, surrounded by his family. His representative, Zach McGinnis, confirmed the news, saying: “Though his voice may now be silent, the characters, stories, and love he gave to the world will live on forever.”

It’s a fitting tribute for someone whose voice genuinely shaped childhoods across generations. The industry has lost one of its most distinctive talents.
