UK’s Midnight Social Media Curfew for Teens has a Built-In Escape Hatch

UK’s under-16s social media ban was not the end of the government’s meddling. Ministers are now going after 16 and 17-year-olds too, with a proposed curfew blocking access between midnight and 6 am. There’s just one problem: teens can turn it off whenever they like.

What’s actually being proposed

As reported by the BBC, the plan pairs the midnight-to-6am social media blackout with a crackdown on “addictive” app features, things like infinite scroll and videos that auto-play the second you open them. These would apply around the clock, not just at night, hitting apps like Instagram and TikTok directly.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall says the changes will help young people sleep better, focus on school, and spend more time with family. Nice goals, sure. Chatbots are getting a talking-to as well, with new rules forcing AI tools to nudge under-18s toward breaks and block out any dodgy, unverified mental health advice.

The loophole nobody’s hiding

Here’s the catch. Unlike the under-16s ban, this social media curfew is optional by design. Apps have to switch these restrictions on by default, but any 16 or 17-year-old can just flip them back off. It’s less a curfew and more a suggestion with extra steps.

Reddit’s already torn it apart, with one user comparing it to speed limit signs, technically there, ignored constantly. Others point out that parental controls already do this job, and that verifying a teenager’s age reliably is its own can of worms nobody’s opened yet.

There’s no firm date yet, though it could land alongside the under-16s ban next spring. Until then, it’s a curfew with the snooze button built right in.
