Marvel’s Wolverine runs at 60FPS with Ray Tracing on PS5

Marvel Wolverine
Insomniac says Marvel's Wolverine runs at 60FPS with ray tracing as its default mode on PS5, no more last-minute trade-offs.

Insomniac has finally stopped treating ray tracing like a bonus feature you had to sacrifice frame rate for. In a new interview with IGN, the studio confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will run at 60 frames per second with ray tracing switched on, right out of the box, on a standard PS5. No Pro required.

Mike Fitzgerald, Insomniac’s Head of Technology, put it plainly: previous games always ended up scrambling to squeeze ray tracing into performance mode at the last minute. This time it was the plan from day one. Performance mode with ray tracing is the default mode. That’s a proper shift in priorities, and it shows Insomniac is building the whole game around that target rather than bolting it on afterwards.

A different kind of playground

Unlike Spider-Man’s single city, Wolverine takes players through the Canadian wilderness and Madripoor, so Insomniac has pushed hard on foliage and jungle environments reacting to wind and characters moving through them. Logan’s claws also mean most props in the game are destructible and react in physically accurate ways, which fits a character who solves most problems by cutting through them.

Extra features confirmed

A few replayability features also came out of the interview:

  • Mission Replay to go back and grab missed collectibles
  • Whiskey bottles as collectibles tied to progression
  • Material crates for unlocking new suits
  • Nightmare Doors, described as trials representing the darker corners of Logan’s mind
  • New Game Plus available at launch, unlike the Spider-Man games where it arrived later

Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, exclusively on PS5.
