Edward Kenway’s swashbuckling return is shaping up to look very different from the one fans remember, and the leaked details around Black Flag Resynced’s combat might be the clearest sign yet of just how far the remake is departing from the original.
A new fight, A familiar captain
A leaked Black Flag Resynced presentation has shed light on what Ubisoft is cooking up for the remake, and combat is among the most significant changes. According to the leak, the system “has been entirely reworked into an action-oriented experience,” with faster, more fluid attacks and a combo-based structure built around dual swords, pistols, and hidden blades.
Central to the new system is a perfect parry mechanic, which opens enemies up for an instant kill and can be followed with up to four chained takedowns. Colour-coded visual cues will also flag enemy attack types, including unblockable moves, and environmental objects like walls and ledges can be used tactically mid-fight.

A Double-Edged HUD
The UI has also been redesigned to match. Two mini-menus now sit in opposite bottom corners, letting players quickly swap between weapons and items without interrupting the flow of combat. It’s a setup that feels built for speed.
Notably, the Black Flag Resynced leaked materials also confirm the return of original voice actor Matt Ryan as Edward Kenway, a reassuring touch of continuity amid the sweeping changes.

Out With the Old?
Black Flag Resynced side-by-side comparisons from the footage reportedly make the tonal shift obvious. Whether long-time fans warm to the new direction or send it to Davy Jones’ locker remains to be seen, but this is clearly a Black Flag built for 2025, not 2013.
