One year. That’s all it took to go from a Game Awards reveal to a liquidation notice.
Nagoshi Studio, founded by Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi, has been officially dissolved. Japan’s Official Gazette, published on 2 November, confirms the decision was made on 31 October. A liquidation process has now begun to settle the company’s assets and liabilities.
What happens to Nagoshi Studio’s debut title?
That leaves Gang of Dragon, the studio’s debut game, in a very bad spot. NetEase pulled funding earlier this year after the team reportedly needed tens of millions of dollars to finish it. The publisher wasn’t willing to pay, and now there’s no studio left to make the game.

The Steam page is still live and still says “coming soon”. I wouldn’t hold my breath. The future of the game is officially unclear, but a revival looks unlikely to me.
Nagoshi spent roughly 30 years at Sega before starting the studio just under five years ago. It’s a rough end for a team that got such a warm reception on one of gaming’s biggest stages.
