Assassin’s Creed Hexe is going through a rough patch. Game director Benoit Richer has departed Ubisoft, and roughly 50 developers have been pulled from the project in the span of just a few days.
Richer heads to Indie
Richer announced his exit on LinkedIn over the weekend, confirming he’s joining indie studio Servo Games as game director. He’d been with Ubisoft since 2017 and spent seven years at Warner Bros. Games before that, so it’s not a small loss for the team.
Developers on the clock
The 50 developers removed from Hexe have been moved to Ubisoft’s Interproject team, which is essentially a holding pool for staff without an assigned project. The catch? They have three months to secure a new role within Ubisoft, or they could face redundancy. That’s a tight window.

The cuts came shortly after Ubisoft also cancelled Alterra, an unannounced Animal Crossing-inspired project, so it’s been a difficult week for the studio.
The game itself is changing too
New Assassin’s Creed franchise lead Jean Guesdon has already made his mark on Hexe, scrapping the cat companion feature in favour of a more grounded tone. The protagonist won’t be a supernatural witch, she’ll just be incredibly knowledgeable, using things like smoke bombs to appear magical to ordinary citizens.
Hexe is currently targeting June 2027, though sources suggest the team reduction may push it to a holiday release.
