Samsung has introduced two new portable SSDs, the P9 and P7, at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany. Both drives use USB4 connectivity and are built for users who need faster storage for large games, high resolution video, AI content, and everyday files.
The new P Series will be available in 1 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB, and 8 TB capacities, with the global launch starting August 31.

Samsung P9 Reaches Up to 4,000 MB/s
The P9 is the faster and more powerful model of the two. Samsung says it can reach sequential read speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,800 MB/s.
That is about twice the performance offered by Samsung’s previous generation T9 portable SSD, which reaches up to 2,000 MB/s for both read and write speeds.
The company is also positioning the P9 as the world’s first 8 TB portable SSD with USB4 support and speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s. The drive previously received a CES 2026 Innovation Award.
The company says its strong sustained write performance also makes the P9 suitable for professional production work, including 12K direct recording. This should make it useful for creators working with large RAW photos and high resolution video files.
P7 Focuses on Everyday Storage
The P7 is aimed at users who want fast external storage without necessarily needing the top performance of the P9.
Samsung says the drive can work with a wide range of devices, including desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, and cameras. This makes it a more flexible option for users who move files between different devices.
The P7 has also gone through 2-meter drop testing, along with shock and vibration tests. Samsung says these durability tests are intended to help protect stored data during travel and outdoor use.
