The Xbox next-gen handheld could arrive in time for the 2027 holiday season, with the next-gen console following a year later. That is the claim in a new report, which cites sources familiar with the matter. The console, known as Project Helix, is reportedly planned for the 2028 holiday season.
Internal projections also put the console’s price between $1,200 and $1,800. That figure would only drop if Microsoft subsidises the hardware.
Software dispute over Project Helix
The report also describes a disagreement between the Windows and Xbox teams over the software Project Helix would use. One side wanted a streamlined version of Windows Home for the handheld. The other wanted software built for the best possible gaming performance.

The dispute reportedly became serious enough that a senior executive threatened to cancel the handheld project entirely. Since then, Xbox has held control of the operating system.
The company has not confirmed any of these dates or prices.
