Destiny 3 petition has more signatures than marathon has players

Destiny 3

The Destiny community isn’t going quietly.

A fan-driven petition urging Sony to greenlight Destiny 3 has already surpassed 170,000 signatures, and it’s still climbing. That figure is particularly striking given that it exceeds Marathon’s estimated peak player count during its opening week, which, based on a reported 2:1 Steam-to-console split, likely sat somewhere between 130,000 and 150,000 players.

Destiny community fighting for its franchise

The timing couldn’t be more pointed. Destiny 2 is no longer receiving updates, with Bungie apparently shifting its focus toward Marathon despite the game’s underwhelming reception. Reports of further layoffs at the studio have only deepened anxiety around the franchise’s future.

Fans are doing more than signing, though. With Destiny 2‘s final update, Monument of Triumph, dropping on 9th June, the community is rallying players to log back in en masse, a show of numbers designed to demonstrate to Sony that the audience is still very much there.

Will Sony listen?

It’s a tough sell. Even The Final Shape, widely regarded as Destiny’s best expansion in years, wasn’t enough to prevent significant cuts at Bungie. With the studio’s valuation having reportedly dropped considerably, Sony seems unlikely to greenlight a major new entry like Destiny 3 anytime soon.

Still, 170,000 signatures for Destiny 3 and counting is hard to ignore. Whether it moves the needle is another question entirely.
