Bungie facing major layoffs after Destiny 2 ends as studio bets everything on Marathon

Bungie studio

It’s a grim picture at Bungie right now. With Destiny 2‘s final update landing on 9th June, the studio is reportedly preparing for significant layoffs, and there’s precious little clarity on what comes next for the team behind it.

No safety net after june

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Bungie has no immediate plans to begin production on a third Destiny title. Staff are apparently pitching new projects, some Destiny-related, but nothing has been greenlit. In a market this volatile, there’s no guarantee anything will be.

In the meantime, the studio is pushing its chips toward Marathon, its extraction shooter that launched in March. Sales haven’t hit expectations, but Bungie is banking on the game growing its audience over time. Some Destiny developers have already been shifted onto that project in recent months.

Another studio caught in the industry’s downward spiral

Sadly, Bungie isn’t alone. Layoffs have cast a long shadow over gaming in 2026. Ubisoft has seen sweeping cuts and project cancellations, and titles like Highguard, announced at The Game Awards, were shut down within two months of going live.

Sony, Bungie’s parent company, has also raised prices on its console and PlayStation Plus subscriptions, signalling wider financial pressure across the board. For the Destiny veterans now facing an uncertain future, that context offers little comfort.
