Bungie isn’t done with Marathon just yet, and according to the game’s creative director, the studio is thinking well beyond the current season.
Years of story, still open to change
Speaking to GamesRadar+, Marathon creative director Julia Nardin confirmed that Bungie has a clear multi-year vision for where the extraction shooter’s narrative is headed. That said, she was quick to clarify that “locked in” isn’t quite the right way to describe it.
“We know where we want to take the story over the next few years, but I don’t want to say it’s completely ‘locked in’ because it’s important to us that our players be able to help shape it,” Nardin told the outlet.

For Bungie, that flexibility isn’t a weakness, it’s by design. Nardin described player influence on the story as “part of the magic of playing a live service game,” suggesting the team sees the community as an active part of Marathon’s creative process rather than just an audience.
New entry points every season
Nardin also addressed accessibility, noting that every season is intended to serve as a fresh starting point. New players joining later down the line won’t be left in the dark, the team plans to ensure there’s always a way to catch up on the story so far.

Marathon launched in March 2026 and currently sits at around 14,000 concurrent Steam players, down from a launch peak of over 88,000.
