The next Call of Duty is already generating controversy, it hasn’t even been officially announced yet. Known CoD leaker @HeyImAlaix has claimed that Modern Warfare 4 is currently being playtested on PlayStation 4, suggesting the title may still be targeting last-generation hardware ahead of its expected October 2026 release.
Alaix has a track record in the CoD community, having previously surfaced accurate details on upcoming skins and datamined content. That said, nothing here has been independently verified, so treat it as speculation for now.
Fans are not impressed
The reaction online has been blunt. Many players are frustrated at the idea of a 2026 Call of Duty still being built around PS4 limitations. One user on X summed it up plainly: losing Warzone progression for a game still running on last-gen hardware isn’t sitting well with the community.
It’s worth noting that Infinity Ward already pushed back on a separate set of MW4 rumours late last year, specifically a claim that the game was essentially a reskin of Modern Warfare 2, urging players not to believe everything they read online.

A few other things to know
One confirmed development: Call of Duty will no longer be available day one on Xbox Game Pass, a decision Microsoft says is part of a broader move to make its subscription services more sustainable.
Modern Warfare 4‘s full scope remains unclear, but the noise around it is only getting louder.
