Black Ops 6 ditches Call of Duty HQ today

Black Ops 6 is packing its bags and leaving Call of Duty HQ. Starting July 7 at noon Eastern, it becomes a standalone download instead of living inside the shared launcher. Honestly, it’s about time.

The news came straight from the Call of Duty Updates account on X. No fanfare, just a simple heads up that the 2024 title Black Ops 6 is going its own way. Call of Duty HQ launched back in November 2023 with big ambitions. It was billed as the “front door” for the whole franchise across consoles and PC. Turns out not every game wants to live under that roof forever.

Reaction online has actually been pretty positive about Black Ops 6 being a standalone download. Quite a few players think every Call of Duty game should get its own standalone launcher instead of being crammed into one bloated hub. Others care more about the bigger picture. With Black Ops 1 and 2 ports reportedly on the way, some fans think this is Activision clearing shelf space for them.

There’s a separate Xbox wrinkle worth flagging here too. Modern Warfare 4 won’t be launching day-and-date on Xbox Game Pass. That call came from Microsoft’s gaming execs, who are still trying to steady the ship after a few rocky years for the brand.

Standalone or not, one thing’s clear: Call of Duty’s launcher strategy is still very much a work in progress.
