Sony won’t budge on killing PlayStation discs

Sony just had its chance to walk back the decision to stop making PlayStation discs from January 2028. It didn’t take it.

The company broke its silence on the backlash during its first-quarter earnings call today, where CFO Lin Tao was asked directly about the fan anger. Her response was polite, corporate, and pretty final: Sony gave everyone a year and a half of notice, so this shouldn’t be a shock.

Tao pointed to one big reason behind the move: digital is simply eating everything, not just gaming. Sony’s own numbers back that up too, with 82% of games now bought digitally rather than on disc.

Tao admitted Sony has heard “various opinions” and that “people have strong views” on the matter. That’s about as close as we got to an apology. Instead of hinting at any change of plan, she said Sony needs to keep figuring out how to engage fans in a “future digital ecosystem.” Vague, but the message underneath is clear: discs are done.

That won’t sit well with the thousands who signed the “Don’t Kill The Disc” petition, or the fans plotting a PlayStation blackout in protest. Sony’s heard the noise. It just isn’t changing course.
