Inzoi is ditching full family control for a single-character RPG mode

Inzoi never quite managed to steal The Sims‘ crown, but its director isn’t done experimenting. Hyungjin Kim has revealed a new mode that ditches the “manage a whole household” formula entirely in favour of something closer to an RPG.

It’s called Canvastown, and according to the game’s Steam event page, it drops you into a single custom Zoi rather than a full family, then connects you to an online server where up to 50 people can hang out and interact at once.

A shared world, not a checklist to clear

Kim explained the thinking through a feature called “AR Company,” which lets players jump into pre-made scenarios and take on set roles alongside everyone else on the server. NPCs come with preset roles too, but players can apparently tweak them “like a movie director” and build their own scenarios on top.

Kim’s own words sum up the pitch nicely: the point of role-playing isn’t to clear a game, it’s to exist in a world with other people for a while. That’s a genuinely different pitch to what Inzoi has been selling so far.

It’s still early days, and Kim admits the mode is rough since it’s being built by a small internal team. Whether Canvastown becomes a proper pillar of the game or a fun side experiment, we’ll have to wait and see. Either way, it’s nice to see Inzoi trying to be its own thing instead of just chasing The Sims.
