Steam Next Fest is drawing fire over a wave of AI games

Steam Next Fest
Players are calling Steam Next Fest an ‘AI Slop Fest’ and asking for a way to hide or report AI games, while only 148 games carry Steam’s AI tag so far.

Steam Next Fest has barely started, and the main topic is not a standout demo. It is the number of AI-made games on the schedule.

The event is live with playable demos for upcoming PC titles. Players say a lot of the lineup looks like it was built from AI-generated assets, and the complaints are louder than in previous editions. One example getting attention is a game called Agile Team, which many users say looks as if it was made entirely from prompts.

Users have been posting on the Steam subreddit, where one thread calls the event the “AI Slop Fest” and asks for an option to hide AI games. Another thread asks for a report function aimed at games that use AI without disclosing it.

Steam’s AI Tag Is Not Catching Everything

Steam lets developers add an Artificial Intelligence tag to their games, but it is optional and does not appear to be used consistently. A search of Next Fest returns just 148 games with the tag. The real figure is probably far higher.

Spotting AI use is also not always easy. Some games make it obvious, but many do not, and developers use AI in different ways, from generating art assets to writing code with tools like Claude. There is no agreed line between acceptable and unacceptable use, which makes both tagging and reporting harder to define.

For now, players who want to avoid AI games have only the tag to go on, and Next Fest has shown how many games slip past it.
