Xbox version of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game delayed six weeks

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game

Imagine clearing your evening for a game launch, only to find out ten hours before release that you’re not getting the game at all. That’s exactly what happened to Xbox players hoping to jump into Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game today.

A delay with almost no warning

Paramount and Gameplay Group International confirmed that the Avatar Legends Xbox Series S/X version won’t launch until September 3, blaming “unforeseen circumstances on a backend feature.” The announcement landed on X roughly ten hours before the game’s scheduled release, which isn’t much of a heads-up when people have already booked the day off to play it.

The statement also confirmed that existing pre-orders for Avatar Legends won’t be cancelled, so Xbox players are stuck waiting it out rather than getting a refund option. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 owners aren’t escaping unscathed either. Their versions will launch today, but without cross-play and only in English.

Reaction on X has been swift and blunt. One user pointed out they took time off work specifically for today’s release, calling the communication horrible. Another asked why the announcement came the day of release if the team already knew it wouldn’t make the Xbox deadline by two months.

Whatever the mysterious “backend feature” issue turns out to be, the timing here is the real story. Pair that with the Switch cross-play restrictions, and even Steam and PlayStation players could feel it, since the online lobbies may end up quieter than expected.
