So we finally know which corner of the Call of Duty universe is getting the Hollywood treatment. Director Peter Berg confirmed at Fanatics Fest in New York that the upcoming Call of Duty movie is rooted in the Modern Warfare universe, and honestly, it’s the safe pick. Modern Warfare is the series’ biggest, most recognisable brand, so if you’re trying to pull in people who’ve never touched a controller, that’s where you start.
Call of Duty Movie locks in its world
Berg dropped the detail during a Call of Duty in Culture panel, and it lines up with what Activision already told us back in April: the Call of Duty movie is locked in for a June 30, 2028 release. The pitch from Activision is that it wants to give longtime fans what they love while still bringing in new audiences. Easier said than done, but Modern Warfare’s got the star power (Soap, Ghost, Price) to make that a real possibility rather than just marketing speak.
Fittingly, Modern Warfare is also carrying the games side this year. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 lands this October, and it’s a genuinely different kind of launch for the series. It won’t be on Game Pass day one, but it will be on Nintendo, the first mainline CoD there since Ghosts landed over a decade ago.
Activision’s also promised no “BS or silly skins” this time round, and the newly revealed Kill Block mode is shipping with more than 500 map configurations, which is a lot of ways to get spawn-trapped.

Two different mediums, same universe carrying the weight. Modern Warfare’s clearly not done cashing in cheques yet.
