Kojima’s just been booted off his own franchise, and now we’ve got a number to put next to the breakup.
Alinea Analytics says Death Stranding 2 has shifted 2.5 million copies since launch. That’s 1.8 million on PS5 and 700,000 on PC, adding up to roughly $170 million in revenue.
Solid numbers on paper. Less solid when you look at the pacing.
1 million of those PS5 sales and 550,000 of the Steam sales apparently happened in the first two months alone. That means the game’s been coasting on fumes ever since. Not the trajectory you want when your publisher’s already eyeing the exit.

A rough comparison to the original
The first Death Stranding has reportedly sold 5 million copies over nearly six years, generating $243 million. PlayStation took 71% of that, Steam 25%, and Xbox mopped up the remaining 4%.
Together, the two games have apparently pulled in $413 million. Sounds massive until you remember the original had six years, multiple sales cycles, and a Director’s Cut to pad that figure. Death Stranding 2 is barely out of the gate and already slowing down.
Timing-wise, this couldn’t land much worse for Kojima. Sony’s stepping back from Physint, and Xbox is now the one publishing his “genre-defining action-espionage title” instead.
If Death Stranding 2‘s sales are genuinely tapering off this early, it’s hard not to read PlayStation’s decision as at least partly a numbers call rather than a creative one.

Kojima’s still Kojima, though. I wouldn’t bet against him bouncing back with Xbox backing him this time.
