PlayStation braces for backlash as State of Play returns

Guys, are you seeing this? PlayStation is walking back into the lion’s den this week, and the lion is still furious about discs.

State of Play returns with two back-to-back shows, the first one running through updates from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners before wrapping up with an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation. Straight after that, a separate State of Play Japan kicks off with deep dives into upcoming games from studios across Japan and Asia.

The disc drama isn’t going anywhere

Here’s the thing though, none of that is really what people are talking about. Ever since Sony confirmed in July that it’s ending disc-based game production from 2028, the replies under every PlayStation announcement have turned into a pile-on, and the State of Play reveal post is no exception.

Will Sony actually address it during the show? I doubt it. My money’s on some carefully worded “we hear our players” line at best, with zero chance they walk the decision back. More likely, the whole thing goes off without a single mention, and the chat spams away into the void.

As for the games themselves, more FF7 Revelation footage is the obvious headline act. I wouldn’t be shocked to see a Marvel’s Wolverine launch trailer either, and it’d be nice to finally get a peep at Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, though don’t hold your breath. Realistically, expect the runtime to lean heavily on third-party titles launching before the year’s out.
