Subnautica 2 sells 2 Million copies in 12 hours and tops Twitch despite ongoing lawsuit

Subnautica 2

Subnautica 2 has had one of the most remarkable early access launches in recent memory, and the numbers speak for themselves.

A launch that broke records

Unknown Worlds‘ long-awaited underwater survival sequel hit early access on PC and Xbox Series S|X, and within just 12 hours it had already shifted 2 million copies worldwide. The game claimed the No. 1 spot on Steam’s global top sellers charts across multiple countries, and peak concurrent players across Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox surpassed 651,000. Steam alone accounted for more than 467,000 of those, roughly nine times the all-time peak of the original Subnautica from 2018.

The momentum wasn’t limited to sales figures either. Subnautica 2 pulled in over 413,000 peak concurrent viewers on Twitch, ranking first across all categories, not just gaming. YouTube Live contributed another 109,000 peak viewers, topping the gaming category there too.

Subnautica 2 lore

Set on an entirely new alien planet, the sequel introduces four-player co-op (a series first), full crossplay between PC and Xbox, new biological progression systems called Adaptations and Biomods, a revamped base building system, and a brand new modular submersible called the Tadpole. The franchise’s non-violent design philosophy remains intact, no weapons, just survival. Player reception has matched the hype, with a 92% positive rating on Steam.

The lawsuit cloud

Despite an ongoing legal dispute between Unknown Worlds‘ original founders and South Korean publisher KRAFTON, development appeared unaffected. With early access expected to run two to three years, it’ll be worth watching how that legal battle unfolds alongside the game’s continued growth.
