The 1996 original Tomb Raider is getting a remake, and it turns out the story picks up where you least expected it to.
Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set within the same continuity as the Survivor trilogy. That means the classic adventure isn’t being reimagined as a fresh start for Lara Croft. The Survivor trilogy happened. This Lara lived through all of it.

Same Lara, New Era
The confirmation came via an interview with IGN, where Jeff Adams, Experience Director at Crystal Dynamics, addressed how Legacy of Atlantis connects to the wider franchise timeline.
Adams was asked directly whether this remake was being treated as a standalone adventure. His answer was a flat no. He clarified that the Survivor trilogy’s events are canon and that Legacy of Atlantis finds Lara at a later stage in her career, now fully in her prime as an adventurer.

It’s a significant narrative choice. The Survivor trilogy spent three games tracing Lara’s transformation from a frightened young woman stranded on Yamatai to a hardened, capable explorer. Legacy of Atlantis slots in after that journey, presenting a Lara who has already earned her reputation.
A question does follow naturally from this. If the original game is now canon to the Survivor trilogy, does that extend to its sequels?

Adams was clear on one point, though. Prior knowledge of the modern games isn’t a requirement here. Legacy of Atlantis is built to work as a standalone experience, with the continuity existing as added context for those already invested in the series.
