Bungie’s just told Marathon players to sit tight a bit longer. Season 3, originally due September 22, has been pushed back to December 8, landing alongside a bigger update called Symbiosis.
Why the Delay
Bungie says the extra time is so the update actually “meets your expectations,” probably means Season 2’s rocky launch taught them a lesson. Fair enough, I’d rather wait than get another mess.
Before December rolls around, though, there’s a stopgap. On October 6, Bungie’s wiping progression and the in-game economy clean for everyone. It’s basically a fresh start, meant to fix the issue where some players blitzed to the endgame while others got left behind, which killed Extraction’s balance last time. Alongside the reset, players get a new Rewards Pass, quality-of-life tweaks, live balance changes, and a limited-time return of Vault Breaker.

There’s a new mode coming in December
Symbiosis is the bigger deal. It brings Marathon’s first permanent PvE mode, a proper break from the usual extraction loop, plus a reworked Perimeter zone, a new social hub with a firing range, a fresh Runner shell, and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode. There’s also a first pass at improving the new-player experience, which, if we’re honest, was overdue.

Bungie’s framing all this as the start of a longer evolution, with more reveals expected later this month about where Marathon’s heading next. We’ll see in December whether this game can turn things around.
