Denuvo has taken legal action against an anonymous game cracker known online as “voices38.” The company claims the person or group has bypassed its Anti-Tamper DRM protection in at least 26 PC games.
The lawsuit was filed on September 14 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. TorrentFreak was the first to report details from the complaint.
Denuvo is asking the court for financial damages and an order that would stop voices38 from bypassing its DRM protection in the future.
Denuvo points to more than 26 games
According to the complaint, voices38 has targeted Denuvo-protected games and removed or bypassed the protection so they could run without the original DRM checks.
The games mentioned in the case include Hogwarts Legacy, Black Myth: Wukong, Resident Evil Requiem, and Doom: The Dark Ages.
The list may already be longer. Reports suggest that Persona 3 Reload and Star Wars Outlaws were also cracked after the lawsuit was filed.
Denuvo does not own the copyrights for these games, which means the case is not based on the games themselves being copied. Instead, the company is using the DMCA’s anti-circumvention rules, which deal with bypassing digital protection used on copyrighted software.
The identity of voices38 remains unknown
The biggest challenge for Denuvo is that it does not appear to know who is behind the voices38 name.
The lawsuit describes the main defendant as an unknown person or entity. It also includes ten unnamed Doe defendants. Denuvo points to accounts on platforms such as Reddit, Discord, and Steam that it believes could be connected to the activity.
The company may seek information from these platforms through subpoenas in an attempt to identify the people behind the accounts. However, getting useful information does not guarantee that the real identity of voices38 will be confirmed.
What happens next?
The lawsuit is still at an early stage, and Denuvo’s claims have not yet been decided by a court.
If Denuvo succeeds, the case could result in damages and an injunction preventing further attempts to bypass its Anti-Tamper technology. The company is also seeking protection against future circumvention involving games that have not yet been released.
For now, the identity of voices38 remains unknown, while the legal case moves forward.
