Turns out Black Flag Resynced isn’t just the 2013 classic with a lick of paint slapped on. Game director Richard Knight has confirmed the team couldn’t actually use code from the original Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, because the tech behind it is basically ancient history by today’s standards.
Black Flag Resynced Game Director Interview
Speaking to JorRaptor, as spotted by GamesRadar+, Knight put it plainly: “Quite frankly, it’s a brand new game.” The old codebase was that far removed from what Ubisoft’s using now that reusing it outright just wasn’t an option. Some assets got used as placeholders here and there, but the original code mainly served as a reference point, a way to peek under the hood and figure out how things worked back then.

That meant rebuilding huge chunks of the game from scratch, partly out of necessity and partly because it opened doors that sticking with the old foundations never could. As Knight explained, going in fresh gives you room to actually make changes rather than being boxed in by what came before.

So next time someone moans that “it’s just a remaster,” point them to this. Building Black Flag again from the ground up sounds like a lot more work than anyone probably expected.
