The Witcher Remake is on hold until The Witcher 4 ships

Four years after it was announced, The Witcher Remake still doesn’t have a release date, and now we know why: it’s been quietly paused so its own developer can go help finish The Witcher 4.

Fool’s Theory is building The Witcher 4’s foundations first

CD Projekt Red confirmed that Fool’s Theory, the studio behind the remake, is currently split between The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past and lending support to The Witcher 4. The official line is that remake work has been “temporarily integrated” with The Witcher 4’s development, because the remake will actually be built on the tools and tech that game creates. Basically, there’s nothing to build with yet.

It’s a sensible move on paper, since reusing The Witcher 4′s assets and pipelines should save time later. Still, it means fans hoping for news on the open-world remake are stuck waiting for an entirely different game to reach a certain stage first, and CD Projekt hasn’t said how far along the remake actually was before work stopped.

At least there’s no shortage of Witcher content to hold people over. The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past reportedly beat every other game to top Gamescom’s new wishlists, so the franchise clearly isn’t hurting for attention. The Witcher remake will just have to wait its turn.
