One billion dollars. That’s what over 6.5 million backers have collectively poured into Star Citizen since Chris Roberts launched its Kickstarter campaign nearly 14 years ago. To put that in perspective, the average contribution works out to roughly $153 per backer, and there’s still no firm release date for version 1.0.
A milestone nobody saw coming
What started as a $2.1 million Kickstarter in 2012 quietly became the most-funded crowdfunding project in history. Contributions grew steadily year on year, then sharply accelerated post-COVID, from around $77.7 million in 2020 to an estimated $230 million-plus in 2025 alone. The billion-dollar mark was crossed just this week.

Star Citizen development keeps rolling
Cloud Imperium Games has long since silenced most of the “vaporware” accusations with consistent updates. The latest, Alpha 4.8, introduces a six-phase squad assault mission, a functioning economy reset, and a proper refuelling gameplay loop, complete with contracts, beacons, and a dedicated operator mode.
The 1.0 question
Squadron 42, the single-player campaign, is targeting a 2026 launch, though Chris Roberts has admitted GTA 6 could force a rethink. Version 1.0 of the main game is still pencilled in for 2027 or 2028, at best.
Fourteen years in, the ambition hasn’t shrunk. Neither has the wait.
